Two Pi Sigma Epsilon members recognized for carrying forward Kara Deering’s commitment to leadership and service

OXFORD, Ohio — The Greater Oxford Community Foundation continues to honor the legacy of Kara Deering through the Kara Deering PSE Leadership Award, recognizing student leaders in the Gamma Gamma chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon at Miami University.

The award was established in memory of Kara Deering, a Miami University student and member of the PSE business fraternity, who died in 1998 after being struck by a drunk driver while traveling to Oxford for a leadership retreat prior to the start of the academic year.

Created to reflect Deering’s commitment to leadership and service, the award recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and uphold the organization’s core principles: work, ethics, honor, belief, competition, skill, wisdom, knowledge, confidence, faith, character and sincerity. Two awards are presented annually.

Deering’s leadership was evident during her time in the fraternity, particularly in her role as vice president of administration, where she demonstrated dedication to supporting fellow members, according to faculty adviser Patrick Lindsay.

“We are proud to continue honoring Kara’s memory and her lasting impact on the PSE chapter at Miami University,” her parents, Daryl and Joyce Deering, said. They expressed hope the award will continue to be given annually to recognize students who reflect her values.

This year’s recipients are Phillipe Jontae Harris, a member of the Class of 2028 majoring in business analytics, and Mark Petrowsky, a member of the Class of 2027 majoring in finance and entrepreneurship.

Harris is completing a 3+1 program and plans to pursue a career in consulting, with the long-term goal of building his own practice to help others reach their full potential. Petrowsky plans to enter financial or strategy consulting within financial planning and analysis or wealth management and aspires to start his own practice or become a managing director.

The award continues to serve as a tribute to Deering’s legacy by supporting students who lead with integrity, serve others and make a lasting impact on their community.
