Talawanda School District Rebranding Fund

Not Your Mascot: Finishing the Change. The purpose of this fund is to assist the Talawanda School District with removing and replacing the Braves name and Native American images from all the campuses of the Talawanda School System. On November 19, 2018, the Talawanda Board of Education voted to retire the Braves name along with all Native American based imagery. This decision reflected the substantive research on the discriminatory and harmful aspects race-based sports mascots have on children of color and others. Faced with a limited budget, the district could only spend money to remove the name and images on items such as uniforms and artificial turf as they naturally age and wear out over time. In the interest of supporting a more timely mascot change to prevent further discrimination and harm to children and others within the Talawanda School System, this fund has been created to support payment for the removing or replacing durable, long-lasting, or permanent objects: wall art, scoreboards, gymnasium surfaces, etc. that may take years before wearing out, if ever. To utilize this fund, the replacement nickname and image may be the word "Talawanda" or the capital letter "T", approved by the Talawanda School Board in 2018, or a future name/mascot, provided that the new name and images not be race-based, and the students were included in the decision. After all images/names removed or archived, remaining funds, if any, may be used for ongoing education/resources on Native American history, culture, and contemporary life. This fund is designed to benefit the Talawanda School District to maintain its public buildings and to eliminate prejudice and discrimination.
