OXFORD, Ohio – The Greater Oxford Community Foundation has welcomed Dr. Corey Shank to its Board of Directors following five years of service on the Foundation’s Finance and Investment Committee.

Shank, an associate professor of finance at Miami University Farmer School of Business, brings extensive experience in finance, research, and community engagement to the Foundation’s leadership. Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Shank earned degrees from Virginia Tech, University of Findlay, and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley before beginning his academic career.

At Miami, Shank teaches corporate finance and international finance, with research focused on how individuals and institutions make financial decisions. Before joining Miami, he taught at Dalton State College in Georgia and Oklahoma State University.

For Shank, joining the Foundation’s board is both a professional and personal commitment to the Oxford community.

“Oxford is home,” Shank said. “My wife and I are raising our family here, and we care deeply about the strength of the community our children are growing up in.”

Shank said he first became involved with the Foundation after looking for ways to contribute locally.

“Given my background in finance, serving on the Finance and Investment Committee felt like a practical and meaningful way to use my professional skills in service of the community,” he said.

During his five years on the committee, Shank helped oversee the responsible stewardship of Foundation assets to support the organization’s long-term mission.

“Much of the work happens behind the scenes, but it is essential to the Foundation’s long-term mission,” Shank said. “The committee helps ensure that the Foundation’s assets are managed responsibly so the Foundation can continue supporting the community not only today, but for many years to come.”

Shank said he is especially proud of the committee’s commitment to thoughtful financial stewardship and its efforts to strengthen how the Foundation evaluates and manages resources.

As a board member, he hopes to contribute to the Foundation’s long-term planning and continued community impact.

“The Foundation is important because it helps turn generosity into lasting community impact,” Shank said. “The gifts, scholarships, and grants the Foundation provides can deeply shape the lives of recipients and strengthen the community as a whole.”

He also highlighted the Foundation’s broad reach across Oxford, supporting initiatives including parks and trail improvements, local schools, scholarships, the arts, social services, civic projects, and quality-of-life initiatives.

Outside of his professional work, Shank is a former pole vaulter who won a national championship and was later inducted into the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame. He is also the author of a book examining how human physiology shapes financial decisions, along with a book chapter on psychopaths in the financial industry.

For the future, Shank said he hopes his service will help the Foundation continue strengthening its impact across the Oxford community for generations to come.

Established in 1997 by Charlie and Joan Teckman in honor of their parents, Harry and Virginia Teckman, both lifelong educators, the award recognizes outstanding teachers, staff and administrators in the Talawanda School District who make a lasting impact on their students and school community.

The kindness and wonder that my students bring into the classroom each day gives me so much hope. They truly see magic in ordinary things, and being around that every day makes the world feel a little lighter.”

           OXFORD, Ohio —

The Greater Oxford Community Foundation continues to honor the legacy of Kara Deering through the Kara Deering PSE Leadership Award, recognizing student leaders in the Gamma Gamma chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon at Miami University.

The award was established in memory of Kara Deering, a Miami University student and member of the PSE business fraternity, who died in 1998 after being struck by a drunk driver while traveling to Oxford for a leadership retreat prior to the start of the academic year.

Created to reflect Deering’s commitment to leadership and service, the award recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and uphold the organization’s core principles: work, ethics, honor, belief, competition, skill, wisdom, knowledge, confidence, faith, character and sincerity. Two awards are presented annually.

Deering’s leadership was evident during her time in the fraternity, particularly in her role as vice president of administration, where she demonstrated dedication to supporting fellow members, according to faculty adviser Patrick Lindsay.

“We are proud to continue honoring Kara’s memory and her lasting impact on the PSE chapter at Miami University,” her parents, Daryl and Joyce Deering, said. They expressed hope the award will continue to be given annually to recognize students who reflect her values.

This year’s recipients are Phillipe Jontae Harris, a member of the Class of 2028 majoring in business analytics, and Mark Petrowsky, a member of the Class of 2027 majoring in finance and entrepreneurship.

Harris is completing a 3+1 program and plans to pursue a career in consulting, with the long-term goal of building his own practice to help others reach their full potential. Petrowsky plans to enter financial or strategy consulting within financial planning and analysis or wealth management and aspires to start his own practice or become a managing director.

Talawanda Grant Supports Therapy Dog Program, Funds Required Background Checks

A new grant helps Talawanda sustain its therapy dog program by covering required background checks for handlers, ensuring student support continues safely and without interruption.

Talawanda School District recently received a grant to fund background checks for therapy dog handlers, allowing the district to maintain and expand a program that supports student wellness and complies with state safety requirements.

The funding will help cover the cost of annual background checks required for individuals who regularly enter school buildings, a legal requirement tied to school safety policies. District officials say the expense had become a barrier to sustaining the therapy dog program at its current level of service.

“This is both a legal compliance issue and a reflection of the district’s commitment to safety and security,” said Holli Hansel, director of communications for Talawanda School District.

The grant will primarily support services at Talawanda Middle School and the district’s elementary schools, where therapy dogs are not consistently on-site. While some schools have therapy dogs handled by staff members, others rely on visits through a local program led by retired teacher Cindy Kettlewell, who is involved in regional animal support initiatives.

Hansel said therapy dogs play an important role in student wellness efforts, which remain a priority for the district. The animals are typically present on a daily or weekly basis and are well-known among students and staff.

Students and staff “love and value the therapy dogs,” Hansel said, noting that their presence often boosts morale and provides emotional support.

The program has been especially impactful during times of crisis, such as the loss or serious illness of a student. In those situations, therapy dogs have been brought into schools to provide comfort and help students cope.

“Our Student Services team greatly values this program,” Hansel said. “The therapy dogs are a great support measure during difficult times.”

The grant will be used immediately to ensure handlers meet district and legal requirements, allowing the therapy dog program to continue serving students without interruption.

Oxford's Newest Dog Park

Oxford’s newest dog park, located near Leonard Howell Park and along the Oxford Area Trail System (OATS), is now open to the public, giving local pet owners a second off-leash space to enjoy with their dogs.

It features two fenced-in play areas — one for large dogs and one for smaller breeds — and is located at 5094 Bonham Road, next to the Black Covered Bridge and near Mill Race MetroPark. Oxford’s original dog park remains open on the north side of town at 6801 Fairfield Road, next to the Oxford Recreational Trails.

“As Oxford becomes increasingly walkable, areas like Leonard Howell are seeing more foot traffic — and a lot of those visitors bring their dogs,” said Chad Smith, director of Oxford Parks and Recreation. “This new dog park complements our existing one and better serves residents on the south side of town.”

The site was chosen based on community feedback and its proximity to amenities including the playground, picnic shelter, boardwalk managed by the Three Valley Conservation Trust, and the scenic OATS trail.

Unlike some municipal parks, both dog parks are free and open to all residents. Basic rules apply: dog owners are asked to clean up after their pets, refrain from bringing toys or chairs that could clutter the space, and promptly remove any aggressive animals.

Smith noted that the park’s low maintenance costs allowed the city to fast-track the project. Additional improvements are planned over time, with future donations supporting upgrades such as water fountains, benches, and other amenities.

“Not every city this size even has one dog park — we now have two,” he said. “And we’re already seeing people use both.”

To help maintain and improve both parks, residents can donate to the Oxford Dog Park Fund, hosted by the Greater Oxford Community Foundation. A QR code is posted on-site, and donations can also be made via the City of Oxford Parks and Recreation website.

Matching donor funds with promising projects and programs, the Oxford Community Foundation funds scholarships and grants that positively impact those living and working in Greater Oxford. The grants provide financial support in the areas of Education, Health, Recreation, Civic Projects, Social Welfare, Arts/Culture, Environment and Beautification. Idealistic college students and Black activists came together in Oxford, OH in 1964 to find their humanity and the common ground to fight as one. This documentary weaves their stories with critical historical analysis. It explores how people form dramatically different worlds broke down barriers of race, class, and gender to organize the most comprehensive campaign of the civil rights movement.
