Types of Named Funds in The Oxford Community Foundation

Unrestricted Funds:
  • Donors place no restrictions on how the income from their Funds is to be used
  • The Grants Committee has leeway to respond to unanticipated grant requests or requests for which there is no restricted named Fund.
  • An Unrestricted Fund can respond to changing needs in the Oxford area.
  • A minimum of $5,000 is needed before income from the Fund, invested for a year, is available for grants
  • A 1% fee is charged two times per fiscal year.
  • Subject to financial market performance, approximately 5% of the Fund is available for grants each year
Restricted Funds:
  • Donors designate a particular non-profit organization or field of interest to receive grants from their Fund
  • If the designated organization or need ceases to exist, and the original donor is no longer living, changing the restriction on the Fund can be time-consuming and expensive
  • A minimum of $5,000 is needed before income from the Fund, invested for a year, is available for grants
  • Subject to financial market performance, approximately 5% of the Fund is available for grants each fiscal year
Organization Endowment Funds:
  • An organization initiates a Fund to serve its charitable objectives
  • Restricted Fund precepts apply
Advised Funds:
  • Donors may make suggestions or offer broad guidelines as to which organization or fields of interest receive grants
  • Donors may specify that income only or principal and income be distributed from the Fund. If they choose to, they may spend the Fund to zero
  • A 1% fee is charged two times per fiscal year
  • At the death of the donor, &/or his or her designee, or five years of inactivity with neither deposits nor advised expenditures, these Funds become part of the unrestricted resources of the Foundation
  • To continue the Fund after death, a donor may include in a will an additional amount, if needed, to endow a Fund.
Charitable Gift Funds:
  • Donors may give to the Foundation during the year that is financially most beneficial
  • Donors write suggestions for donations (that match the Foundation's charitable objectives), and a check is written to the charity from the Charitable Gift account.
Flow-through Funds:
  • Donors make a gift to the Foundation with the stipulation that the entire amount be spent within a particular time period
  • Donors may restrict funding to a particular project or leave the Fund flexible to be used at the discretion of the Grant Committee.
  • A 2% fee is charged on each deposit/gift
Scholarship Funds:
  • May be either Flow-through or Restricted
  • Require a minimum scholarship award of $500.00.
  • Minimum endowed Fund for a scholarship is $25,000.
Administrative Funds:
  • Are designated to support the day to day operations of the Foundation
  • Approximently 5% of the Fund is available each fiscal year to be used for administering the Foundation
  • No fee is charged
